Occupation:

Rod Breitling is a Land Survey Science instructor.  He began teaching at STI in 1986.

Rod has a master’s degree in Career Technical Education with an emphasis in land surveying from South Dakota State University and is a Professional Land Surveyor in the state of South Dakota.

Along with his years of surveying experience in the industry, he is a former Co-Owner of Dakota Land Surveying Inc., Past President of the South Dakota Society of Professional Land Surveyors, Owner of RB Land Surveying LLC and has received the Outstanding Contribution to the South Dakota Land Surveying Profession.

“I believe in stressing the fundamentals. This gives the student a strong foundation and a platform to build new knowledge upon. My style is more of a student/coaching approach by providing an atmosphere of learning with everyday real world industry conditions and situations.

Description

Survey II is a surveying course in traversing and topography. Traverse analysis will be computed on spreadsheets, computed by software, drawn and annotated in CAD. Mapchecks will be performed along with computer generated adjustment files. Topographic maps will be drawn in CAD with topographic data, contouring, alignments and profiles. CAD drawings will be produced using "data controllers" for collecting the data using "feature codes", "figures and lines" and "description keys" to aid the drawing. Robotic Total Stations, Data Controllers/Collectors and Digital Levels will be introduced to the science of surveying. Students will capstone the course by mapping a portion of the campus using Civil-3D software. Students will produce a ".fbk" file of figures and lines, use digital levels on control points and traverse as described above. Prerequisite: CET 110, CAD 120 Corequisite: CET 123
