She worked for 15 years at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital (formerly St. Joseph's) in Mitchell as a staff Respiratory Therapist. In 1995, when her husband got a job at Sioux Falls Ford (formerly Ben Hur Ford), she made a career change and trained on the job to become a Sleep Diagnostic Technologist at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls and she became a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist through the BRPT in 1997. Darla was promoted to Lead Sleep Technologist for Avera McKennan's 8 bed sleep center in 2008 and continues in that role today. She has led Avera McKennan's Sleep Diagnostic Center through 4 AASM accreditation projects since 2005. Darla has attended numerous national and regional education and membership meetings in an effort to remain current in all aspects of Sleep Medicine, including maintaining contact with her peers in the industry.

Darla was hired as an Adjunct Instructor for ENDT/PSG II Course at Southeast Tech in 2009 and has taught this course each fall since then. She started teaching the ENDT/PSG I Course in the Spring 2020.

Darla maintains her license to practice Respiratory Therapy in the state of SD and her certification with the NBRC.

Darla is a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist in good standing with the BRPT.
