Description

This course focuses on the principles of asepsis, sterile technique, and the critical role of the surgical technologist in maintaining a sterile environment during surgical procedures. Emphasis is placed on understanding surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies, as well as the environmental and safety systems within the operating room. Students will learn the principles and practices of sterile technique, the processes involved in surgical scrub and gowning, and the responsibilities of the surgical team in maintaining a sterile field. Key topics include the preparation and handling of instruments and supplies, performing surgical counts, and understanding wound healing and closure techniques. Through lecture and hands on activities, students will apply these concepts to the surgical setting. Corequisite: ST 110, HC 117, HC 118, HC 118L
