STC Instructor BIO

B. Todd Wohlwend, System and Network Security Instructor, has 35+ years of professional computer experience that includes desktop, network administration, system administration, and IT security.  He has earned Bachelors and Masters degrees at South Dakota State University.  He also holds several computer related certifications such as Network+, RHCT, RHCSA, and CNA.  As an instructor, Todd teaches many introductory and upper level networking, system and security classes at Southeast Technical Institute which include, Windows Server, Linux Administration, Wireless Data Communications, Server Virtualization, and Network Services and Security.  He is a skilled network, systems, and security administration professional who specializes in keeping up on current and future computing technologies.

Description

This course teaches the principles of network services such as web servers, secure shell, email and the ability to secure those services from unwanted outside network influence. The primary focus will be placed on LAN security, secure LAN to WAN connectivity, and securely publishing network services to the WAN. This will include starting with the basics like simplistic routers, virtual appliances, Windows servers using RRAS, and Threat Management Gateway software. Topics will include vulnerability scanning, network hardware and software firewalling, installation of various network services, and managing secure connections to those services. Prerequisite: CIS 160, CIS 171, CIS 180
